The town of Otavalo in Ecuador is famous for the Saturday Indian market which dates back to pre Inca times. It is a must see on any vacation to Ecuador, though many tourists complain that the market has become overly touristy. The countryside surrounding Otavalo provides some excellent walking. Nearby Mojanda, with its highland lakes, is ideal for fishing, walking and horseback riding. There are some beautiful haciendas nearby that provide great bases for such exploration and hiking.

Hotels & Haciendas in Otavalo

Hacienda Pinsaquí - This hacienda is located 15 minutes' drive north of Otavalo, and set within a subtropical garden. The hotels guests have included Simon Bolivar, liberator of Ecuador. The Hacienda's 28 rooms have private bathroom and several have open fireplaces. Horse riding and mountain biking can be arranged by the friendly staff at this hotel. Live indigenous music is played every Saturday (market day).

Hacienda Cusin - this hacienda was run down and deemed overpriced when we visited in 2007. The hacienda has 30 rooms in total of highly variable standard. Horse riding trips can be organised, and the hacienda hotel has its own stables.

Hosteria Chorlavi - a converted 18th century hacienda located 20 minutes north of Otavalo in Ecuador. The hotels 54 rooms mostly overlook colonial courtyards, while the newer rooms have their own gardens.

Hosteria La Mirage - a luxury boutique hotel just outside Otavalo in Ecuador, this a a great place to go to get pampered. Many guests deem it rather over the top with rose petals on the hotels beds, but it's an excellent hotel none-the-less..
