Egypt's Travel Secrets

Insider knowledge tips & Egypt's Must Do's

Egypt is a country rich in culture, making a perfect destination for cultural holidays. As a ancient civilisation, Egipt has has plethora of pyramids, tombs, ruins and museums to explore. There are also some first class beach resorts, as well as excellent diving holiday opportunities at the Red Sea Resorts such as Sharm El Sheikh.

Egipt Holidays: Culture

Egipt’s archaeological sites have amazed and enthralled visitors for centuries. Holiday highlights include the pyramids of Giza, the beautiful temples of Karnak and Philae, and the tombs in the Valley of the Kings. Cairo is the base for exploring Egipt's pyramids - allow at least a couple of days to tour the amazing site. Luxor is a also great travel base to visit temples and ruins. One can travel from Cairo to Luxor either by overnight train or by catching a flight. Alexandria used to be a famous port and resort but is now rather tired, though it does have some excellent restaurants.

Beaches: Red Sea Resorts and Hotels

Diving and relaxing on beaches are also popular holiday activities. Sharm el Sheikh (Sinai) is the upmarket beach resort of Egipt - there are numerous luxury hotels and resorts where one can get pampered. The diving in Sharm El Sheik is excellent. Travel to the north and Dahab is a less fancy and slightly more laid back place to relax on holiday, though the beaches aren't as good as at Sharm el Sheikh. Hurghada also has good beaches, and is the central point for package holidays and cheap flights to Egipt.

Egipt Cruises on the Nile

One of the most luxurious ways to travel in Egypt is by boat. Taking a nile cruise isn't cheap, but it is a romantic way to travel in style. Nile cruises can last from a couple of days to over a week. Seeing the Egiptian way of life on the riverbanks is fascinating, and the scenery is beautiful at times. An alternative to the cruise liners is the traditional felucca boat.

Weather

Much of Egypt is the desert, whose weather is hot during the day but can get cold at night. During the summer, anywhere south of Cairo is almost unbearably hot, though that might be what is sought in a beach holiday. Winter sees the best weather for visiting places such as Luxor, though this time of yea sees rainier weather in Cairo and Alexandria. The beaches at Sharm El Sheikh only just see beach type weather during the mid-winter months, when it might be a little cold.
