Cotopaxi volcano is a splendid tourist attraction near Quito (just 90 minutes drive). Many tourists visit on just a day tour from Quito, but there are some fantastic haciendas and hotels nearby (the area is of Latacunga). A tour to Cotopaxi volcano involves a visit to the local museum, as well as hikes around the base of the volcano in the National Park. The snow capped volcano is very high - you will need at least a couple of nights acclimatizing in Quito before your tour.
Cotopaxi & Latacunga Haciendas in Ecuador
San Agustin De Callo - close to Cotopaxi National Park is one of Ecuador's most beautiful haciendas. Built on the site of a former Inca Palace, this family home has been converted into a luxurious hacienda. San Agustin's five rooms face a central courtyard, and have log fires and antique bathtubs. There is an Inca wall and even an Inca Chapel. The restaurant has views of Cotopaxi Volcano, and serves a mainly Ecuadorian menu. One can sense the history upon walking into this hacienda, which is a truely special place to stay. Other than hiking tours in Cotopaxi National Park, tourists can also go horseback riding in Ecuador's countryside.
Hosteria La Cienega, Ecuador - a grand old hacienda is located 1½ hours south of Quito on the edge of Cotopaxi National Park. Converted into a hotel in the mid 80’s, La Cienega now has 35 rooms. The entrance to the hacienda is impressive as one travels up an avenue of giant trees that lead up to a colonial arch.
